Trainees are required to have health insurance for the entire length of the training program as required by the J-1 Visa government regulations. Trainees who work a full time schedule will be eligible for health insurance once they have satisfied the waiting period requirements. Additional coverage may be required by the J-1 Visa regulations (see below). Most J-1 Visa sponsorship organizations offer low-cost insurance policies for international trainees that can be used during the waiting period, or for the entire training if the trainee chooses.

There are three options for health insurance coverage:
  • Trainees may use private policies in their home countries if they provide coverage in the U.S. that meets the J-1 Visa requirements.
  • Insurance may be purchased through a policy offered by the J-1 Visa sponsorship organization.
  • Trainees at U.S. properties are eligible for company-sponsored benefits if they are employed on a full-time basis and satisfy the waiting period requirements. If a trainee elects company-sponsored benefits following his or her waiting period, trainees are required by the J-1 Visa to have supplemental insurance called Medical Evacuation and Repatriation during the time they are covered by the company-sponsored plan. This can be purchased through most J-1 Visa sponsorship organizations.
