The training programs are full-time, paid positions up to 18 months long. Positions are designed to:
  • Teach the trainee new skills, techniques and philosophies in the hospitality field
  • Allow tracking and evaluation of a trainee's progress
Positions offered may vary based on property needs and backgrounds of individual candidates. Trainees should note that:
  • Most properties offer hourly training positions in the rooms division and food and beverage areas of the hotel. However, training in other areas of the hotel also may be offered.
  • Trainees may rotate through different departments, or focus on one area of their interest, to learn how a U.S. Marriott hotel operates.
  • Training in housekeeping, bellstand, stewarding or bartending cannot comprise an entire training program, but may be part of a rotational training program that also involves other areas of the hotel.
  • On occasion, training programs may involve more than one hotel location. The visa sponsorship organization must be informed of all locations at the time of application, as well as a schedule indicating when the trainee will be working at each location.
  • If trainees are found to be overqualified for an hourly training program, a supervisory or management level position may be offered and the visa can be sponsored by Marriott International.
  • J-1 Visas for supervisory and management training positions can be sponsored by Marriott International's J-1 Visa Sponsorship Program rather than AIPT or another external visa sponsorship organization. These applications are processed in the Immigration Services department at corporate headquarters.
Note: The above guidelines are taken from AIPT's program guidelines. Other J-1 visa sponsorship organizations may have slightly different requirements for training programs.
