United Negro College Fund

At a time when a college degree is what a high school diploma was to previous generations, the minimum entry-level requirement for almost every well-paying career, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) plays a critical role in enabling more than 5,000 students each year to attend college and get the education they want and deserve. To close the educational attainment gap between African Americans and the majority population, UNCF helps promising students attend college and graduate by providing operating funds for its 39 member colleges, all of them small, liberal arts institutions, making it possible for them to offer their students 21st century academic programs while keeping their tuitions to less than half the average of other private colleges. In addition, the fund administers 300 scholarship and internship programs, so that even students from low- and moderate-income families can afford college tuition, books and room and board.

Annually, The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation grants up to $500,000 to the Hispanic College Fund and United Negro College Fund for the Marriott Scholars Program. In addition, Marriott leaders provide career guidance, mentoring and internships to students.

National Academy Foundation

The National Academy Foundation (NAF) sustains a nationwide network of career-themed academies that are organized as small learning communities. NAF students remain together throughout their high school years with a core group of specially trained teachers. This vision has evolved into a premier reform model for public education throughout the country, and has helped inspire the contemporary small school/ small learning community movement. Through a nine-year partnership, Marriott has contributed more than $400,000, plus $25,000 in in-kind support annually to the Foundation.

Youth Career Initiative

Created and managed by the International Tourism Partnership, the Youth Career Initiative (YCI) enables international hotels to provide a six-month education program for high school graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program is designed to empower young people by providing them with the necessary life and vocational skills to expand the choices and options in their lives. YCI programs are conducted by hotel management teams and combine both theory and practical instruction. The program includes communication skills, information technology and finance as well as the working components of the hotel. Each program is tailored to suit the country and the needs of its youth.

Marriott International first became involved in YCI when the JW Marriott Bangkok implemented a program in 1997. In 2004, the JW Marriott Bucharest was the first hotel to implement YCI in Europe, and in 2005 the Marriott hotels in Brazil launched the first program in Latin America. As an extension of the “Spirit To Serve Our Communities” initiative, Marriott has taken on the role of champion for the implementation of YCI within the hotel industry globally.
