Marriott International and its hotels and businesses have a long history of supporting the American Red Cross. As Marriott operations have expanded globally, so has our partnership with the Red Cross. Marriott business units and employees have demonstrated support for local and national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies by sponsoring blood drives, contributing to disaster relief efforts, and raising funds for local programs. In addition, Marriott International makes an annual contribution to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which allows for funds to be directed to Marriott sites around the world affected by disaster. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the world's premier humanitarian organization with a unique network allowing them to have a presence in almost every country. Founded in 1919, the International Federation exists to improve the situation of the world's most vulnerable people. In 1992, Marriott became the first major hospitality company to launch a nationwide program to donate surplus non-perishable food to Feeding America, formerly named America’s Second Harvest. As Marriott grew, so did Feeding America and the product donations it received from Marriott. In 1995, Marriott expanded its donation program through the Feeding America network to include surplus prepared and perishable foods, increasing the variety and quantity of food contributed by Marriott business units across the United States. Many of the products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and seafood, are often difficult for feeding programs to obtain. Feeding America is the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States, with a network of more than 200 regional food banks and food-rescue organizations that serves all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It distributes food and grocery products to approximately 50,000 local charitable hunger-relief agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, women's shelters, Kids Cafes, Community Kitchens, and other organizations that provide emergency food assistance. In times of disaster, food banks also work closely with the American Red Cross, another Marriott partner, to help administer emergency relief services. Marriott International is dedicated to helping people worldwide overcome their inability to purchase enough food to meet basic nutritional needs. While our U.S. operations partner with Feeding America, Marriott encourages its units around the globe to support organizations with similar goals and services in their countries. Over the years, numerous Marriott International business units have been involved in Habitat for Humanity ("Habitat") projects. In 1995, Fairfield Inn by Marriott established a formal relationship with Habitat for Humanity International in conjunction with the grand opening of its 200th hotel. Marriott International's partnership with Habitat has grown to include other brands and businesses around the world and the contribution of volunteer labor and funds toward the completion of hundreds of homes. Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with people in need to build simple, safe, affordable homes. Founded in 1976, Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses, providing some 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities and 83 nations with shelter. Habitat for Humanity constructs homes in partnership with families in need, local coordinating committees, local and national governments, corporate sponsors and volunteers. Funds to build houses come from community resources and from start-up capital provided by Habitat for Humanity International headquarters. Future homeowners work together with volunteers to build their homes, and re-pay the local Habitat affiliate for the cost of the house over a period of seven to 25 years. No profit is added to the price of the house, and interest is not charged on the mortgage. Payments are returned to a local revolving fund used to help construct more homes.
