Shakahari

Shakahari
“When my team and I are cooking, we use family recipes from our birthplaces in Asia”, says Pensiri Pattanachaeng, one of the head chefs at Shakahari. “For me this means Bangkok - I’ve brought my favourite dishes from home with me, and I import my ingredients from Thailand.” Such authenticity is one of the reasons why this signature vegetarian Asian restaurant, which also offers Chinese, Japanese and Indian food, has a waiting line of guests stretching out of the door most days.

But it’s not just the quality of the food that guests adore at Shakahari - it’s also the quirkiness of the presentation. On arrival, you are ushered towards three Evo grills, where delicious fresh appetisers are being made. “You can stand with the chefs, interact with them, and order whatever you like”, says Pattanachaeng.
The guests choose hot and cold tasting dishes from dozens of choices - including chili-laced Som Tom papaya salad, scallion pancakes and hakka noodles with sesame - before moving on to main courses. Sweet-toothed guests can then pick out treats from the dedicated “dessert room”.

The enthusiasm of the chefs and the imaginative concept behind the restaurant have struck a chord with the local foodies. “It became very popular very quickly,” says Pattanachaeng, “it took less than a week after launch for the idea to catch on. Many restaurants in Pune offer international cuisine but change it for Indian tastes: we stick to the original flavours, and that’s another reason Shakahari is so popular.”
