Local Attractions

Guests visiting the Bay Area often hone in on San Francisco as their ideal vacation destination. But those who do miss out on a hidden gem: Oakland. A convenient urban retreat for travelers, Oakland invites you to discover all the spirited city and surrounding areas have to offer when you book a vacation at one of the top Bay Area hotels.

Arts & Entertainment

Oakland has nurtured, or been a second home to, many of the world’s most famous people in the liberal arts and sciences, including novelists Gertrude Stein, Jack London, Amy Tan and Maya Angelou; actors Mark Hamill, Bruce Lee and Tom Hanks; architect Julia Morgan; classical conductor Calvin Simmons; and rappers MC Hammer and Tupac Shakur.

One of the most ethnically diverse cities in the U.S., with over 150 languages spoken within the city's borders, Oakland holds several annual cultural events, such as Art & Soul Weekend (held on Labor day weekend), the Cinco de Mayo Fruitvale Festival Parade (early May), the Chinatown StreetFest (late August), and the Oakland Holiday Parade (December). Indulge in some culture when you visit our downtown Oakland hotel.

Lake Merritt

This large tidal lagoon, just east of downtown, is home to many acres of parkland, as well as the United States’ first official wildlife refuge. Rent a sailboat, visit the small children’s amusement park dubbed “Fairyland,” or just take a picnic and relax in Oakland’s more than 250 days per year of sunshine.

Fox Theater

Originally opened in 1928 as Oakland’s largest movie theater palace, the grand architectural landmark flourished for many years before falling into decline and eventually closing. After more than 40 years of silence, the theater reopened in 2009 as a school, restaurant and popular live concert venue.

Paramount Theatre

Built in 1931, this massive Art Deco movie theater was the largest multi-purpose theater on the West Coast, seating 3,476 people. Today, it is the home of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and Oakland Ballet, and venue for live music events, plays, stand-up comedy, lecture series, and screenings of classic films.

Oakland Zoo

A popular Bay Area attraction, this 100-acre zoo, nestled in the rolling hills of 525-acre Knowland Park, is easily walkable and contains modern exhibits. Visit your favorite furry friends and create lasting memories on your next trip!

Chabot Planetarium

Chabot Planetarium offers many wonderful experiences for visitors of all ages. Enjoy a date night with a live planetarium show, telescope viewings or a wide variety of exhibits. Culture is never far from our hotel.

Jack London Square

Jack London Square is a popular entertainment and business destination on the waterfront. Shop in local boutiques. Enjoy a monthly art market, or take in a meal at one of the waterfront’s many cafes and restaurants. No matter what you’re in the mood for, our Jack London Square hotel gives you easy access.

Oracle Arena

The proud home of the Oakland A’s, Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics, Oracle Arena is also a great destination for live shows and entertainment. Many of music’s biggest names play at this venue year-round. Check out the schedule to book tickets to a game or see a show during your stay!

Historic Downtown

Don’t miss the chance to stroll the streets of historic downtown, enjoying the city’s 40 clubs and modern bars and more than 75 acclaimed restaurants and cafes. The small area also boasts 30+ galleries and cultural venues, and more than 32 attractions and annual events. We can assure you, you won’t get bored.

Tribune Tower

This 21-story building is the former home of Oakland’s main newspaper, the Oakland Tribune, and is also a major architectural landmark of the city. Although the building no longer houses the newspaper, it still bears the paper’s iconic sign outside.

Called “Oakland’s Chinatown” to differentiate it from the popular Chinatown in San Francisco, this pan-Asian melting pot is full of authentic shops, entertainment and Oakland restaurants. Considered one of the safest and most vibrant Chinatowns in America, this is a must-visit destination for guests.

Plank guests have a number of options, from a sun-filled outdoor experience on our huge patio, featuring our beer garden with over 50 handcrafted local beers or a game of bocce ball to an energy-filled inside experience with 18 lanes of state-of- the-art bowling, catching a sporting event on one of our 40 HDTVs or flexing your competitive muscle playing interactive video games. Not to be missed for the over 21 crowd, The Boardroom is our special place for adult VIPs, equipped with music, private bowling lanes, billiards, bar and lounge with views overlooking the bay.

Golden Gate Bridge

Considered one of the top architectural achievements of the 20th century, this iconic red suspension bridge spanning the San Francisco Bay is one of the West Coast’s most photographed attractions. Whether you hike, walk, bike, shop, take a personally guided tour, grab a photo of you high atop the bridge with green screen photography or just sit back and take it all in, there is something for everyone.
