Known for its historic Old Town and for the stately Heidelberg Castle, Heidelberg, Germany is packed with centuries-old historic sites, beautiful European scenery, and unique shopping experiences.
The Old Town, convenient to downtown Heidelberg shops and hotels, is home to the Heidelberg Town Hall and St. Peter’s Church, built almost a thousand years ago; you can’t miss the 14th century Church of the Holy Spirit, or Knight St. George’s house, an ornate, late-Renaissance architectural masterpiece. And the Students’ Prison behind the Old University Building, where students were once imprisoned for minor follies and transgressions, is a must-see!
Before returning to your Heidelberg accommodations, take a ride on the half-cable car, half-incline railway funicular, all the way up to Heidelberg Castle and Gardens––home of the world’s largest wine barrel, constructed in 1751. Visit the Hercules fountain as you peruse the wares at the open-air Marktplatz market; for indoor shopping, there are over 400 shops and boutiques in Heidelberg, as well.
Hotel guests can climb the Königstuhl, an 1800-foot-high hill in the Odenwald Mountains, or stroll along the Schlangenweg, or “Winding Path,” walking through terraced vineyards until you reach the beautiful ruins of St. Michael’s Monastery.
