The Old Town square is the most significant square in historical Prague. It originated in the 12th century and since then it has witnessed many events. Beside the Old Town Hall and the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the square has several other attractions. These include the baroque St. Nicholas church, the rococo Kinský palace housing the National Gallery exhibition hall, the Stone Bell house, the Municipal Gallery concert and exhibition rooms, and the Memorial to Master Jan Hus.
Visit this Art Nouveau building, constructed in 1905-1911 (A. Balsanek, O. Polivka) on the spot of the former king’s court. It was a seat of the kings of Bohemia from the end of the 14th century until 1438. The rich interior and exterior decoration is work of A. Mucha, M. Svabinsky, and J.V. Myslbek. The monumental Smetana concert hall forms the centre of the building and is the place of the International Music Festival Prague Spring, other concerts and important social events.
The Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge that connects the Old Town and Mala Strana. It was actually called the Stone Bridge during the first several centuries. Its construction was commissioned by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and began in 1357. In charge of the construction was architect Petr Parler, whose other works include the St.Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle.
Both ends of the Charles Bridge are fortified by towers called the Lesser Town Bridge Tower and the Old Town Bridge Tower. The Charles Bridge is 515 meters long and 10 meters wide. The initial idea was to build a functional construction for knight tournaments, and the only decoration on the bridge was a simple crucifix. From 1683 to 1928, thirty sculptures and sculptural groups of the saints were gradually set on the bridge piers. The oldest is of John of Nepomuk.
Astronomical Clock Old Town Hall
The Prague Astronomical Clock (Orloj) is a medieval astronomical clock in Prague and is mounted on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall in the Old Town Square. It is composed of three main components: the astronomical details, “The Walk of the Apostles”, and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. The oldest part of the Orloj dates back to 1410 when it was made by clockmaker Mikulas of Kadan and Jan Sindel.
One of the city’s most characteristic sights, dating back to the late nineteenth century, overlooks the town from the top end of Wenceslas Square. Soviet troops fired on the museum as they occupied Prague in August 1968. The interior is fairly dramatic: a grand staircase sweeps up to the Pantheon and one of the halls is filled with busts of Czech cultural heroes. The exhibits are old-fashioned, focusing on fossils, stuffed animals, minerals and archaeological finds.
This Neo Renaissance building, constructed in 1876-1884 by J. Zitek and J. Schulz, was originally designed for a picture gallery, collection of antiquities and concerts. In the years 1918-1938 and 1945-1946 it housed the National Assembly. The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra found its seat there in 1946. The main hall - the Dvorak Hall – is world famous as the place where the Prague Spring music festival concerts take place every year.
A small version of Paris’s Eiffel Tower, the Petrin Observation Tower was built in 1891 for the Jubilee Exhibition. The tower is 60 meters tall, and it sits on the top of Petrin hill, overlooking Prague. The Observation Tower is set in landscaped gardens that dominate the summit of Petrin hill. The view is magnificent and well worth the 299 step climb to reach the viewing platform. Petrin Hill is 318 meters (1043 feet) high.
National cultural monument, the symbol of more than millennial development of the Czech state. Since its foundation in the last quarter of the 9th century it has been developing uninterruptedly throughout the past eleven centuries. It is a monumental complex of ecclesiastical, fortification, residential and office buildings representing all architectural styles and periods, surrounding three castle courtyards and covering 45 hectares. Originally it used to be the residence of princes and kings of Bohemia, since 1918 it is the seat of the President.
