Description

Yerebatan Sarnıcı or Sunken Palace is the largest of many cisterns thriving beneath Istanbul and is the only sight of its kind restored for public viewing. Constructed in the 6th Century during Emperor Justinian I's reign, a Basilica occupied this space during the 300s. Take a tour of the historic subterranean reservoir to beat the city heat and soak in magnificent architecture. Ominous classical music forms the background score as you wander along the wooden pathway exploring ancient columns and mystical arches. To the northwest, discover bases of two Medusa-headed beams that can be traced back to the Roman era. The monument has played movie set for Hollywood blockbusters including one from the James Bond series.
