Historic Virginia Key Beach Park

Colorful History!
  • Neighborhood: Key Biscayne
  • Category: Day Trips & Walks

Included in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is an important landmark. During the 1950s era, awareness about civil rights increased and black servicemen who bravely fought for their nation in World War II on their return were angered owing to the color discrimination everywhere, including the recreational facilities, thereby, resulting in huge protests. Since Miami was a tourist hotspot and these civil rights protests and unrest would hamper its tourism growth, a compromise was reached upon and a 'colored-only beach' was opened in 1945, today it is known as Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. Over the period of time, this park closed down, but during 2008, the local community revamped and visitors can now check-out the various sites and venues. It features a picnic pavilion, playground, toy train for kids, a carousel and many other fun activities. Its picturesque setting combined with modern facilities make it an ideal venue for hosting private events, picnics and parties. For more details, check website or call ahead.
