Washington County was formed March 28, 1781, out of Westmoreland County and named for General George Washington. The area was a scene of activity in the Whiskey Rebellion from 1791-1794. The county seat, Washington, was made a borough in 1810, and a city in 1924. Washington County is located on US Route 40, formally known as the National Road.
