Doorman
Hotel Grande Bretagne,
a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens

Athens, Greece

The Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens, sits in the main square of Athens, Greece. It’s a landmark hotel that welcomes guests and customers from all over the world. And Dimitris Taktikos has greeted thousands of guests during his 34 years as a doorman at the hotel. Dimitris has an uncanny ability to remember names and faces of nearly every guest or customer he has met, once surprising a guest to the hotel with “Welcome back!” when the guest returned after 10 years.

Though always remembering his repeat guests, what Dimitris loves most about his job is that every day is different. He wouldn’t be satisfied sitting at a desk all day — he wants to be where the action is, including maneuvering traffic, procuring guest transportation, negotiating arrivals and departures, and welcoming VIPs.

When asked who or what has taught him the most during his life, Dimitris doesn’t hesitate to say, “The street is my university! I really see life here at the hotel front door — good and bad and nice and strange — THIS is my school.”

When Dimitris’ son was just six months old, he was diagnosed with renal disease. He required countless surgeries and a kidney transplant in the first three years of his life. Thankfully, 31 years later, his son is healthy. This experience with his son gave Dimitris a special sensitivity to the needs of the hotel’s younger guests. One evening, a young boy and his mother arrived at the hotel. The child thought one of the doors was open and ran through the glass door, badly injuring himself. In one swift move, Dimitris scooped up the boy, hailed a cab and accompanied the child and his mother to the hospital. Only when he arrived at the hospital did Dimitris call the hotel to explain why he had to leave so suddenly.

The hotel team wasn’t surprised, as he is well known as the “gentleman” who will selflessly put others before himself, exemplifying The Luxury Collection brand’s “be authentic” service culture.
