Stephen Garff Marriott Award of Excellence for Culture
Kochi Marriott Hotel
Kochi, India

Though the Kochi Marriott Hotel has only been open for three years, it has built a reputation in the city as a workplace that welcomes and values each person. Marriott’s core value of “putting people first” influences everything the staff does at the hotel — from the way they treat their guests to the way they care for their associates. General Manager Anand Ganesan and his team strive “to build a workplace that welcomes people as they are and applauds them for where they’re going.”

Each morning during their daily stand-up meetings, every department recognizes an associate who was mentioned in a Guest Voice or TripAdvisor review the day before. Hotel leadership understands that associates who feel appreciated are more motivated to better serve guests. The hotel also has a reward program, “Brilliant Host,” for associates who best demonstrate the brand’s three “Art of Hosting” principles.

To reduce turnover and attract new talent, the hotel has used social media to promote associate success stories. In personal video vignettes, associates share their experiences with Marriott and how the Marriott culture has impacted their lives.

The “put people first” culture is the foundation of all the initiatives and activities the hotel plans. Every Wednesday is known as “Wellbeing Wednesday,” with an equal focus on physical, financial, emotional and career well-being. The hotel’s leadership team encourages associates to find new opportunities for personal and professional growth.

To help develop a healthy spirit of competition throughout the year, associates are divided into four teams: Spartans, Titans, Gladiators and Vikings. Each team is comprised of diverse departments that may not typically work together in day-to-day operations. At Associate Appreciation events, for example, fun activities are assigned point values to build team comradery.

“Putting People First has to be the absolute standard,” says Jana Ramakrishna, Multi-Property Director of Human Resources. “When we do that, everything falls into place. When we give our associates ownership of the activities we plan to support the culture, they feel valued and part of the success of the hotel.”
