When Director of Human Resources, Eugenia Mardenskaya, set out to create the TakeCare program at the Moscow Marriott Hotel Novy Arbat, she knew she had to start with getting her associates’ input and giving them ownership of the program. She wanted to give associates an opportunity to be heard and to make a personal investment in initiatives that matter most to them.

The hotel’s TakeCare team is comprised of champions from every department in the hotel. Together they listen to other associates to see what activities would help them all live out the TakeCare mindset. They focus on three areas: Me, You + Me and We.

Me: The hotel offers associates free access to the hotel gym; monthly physical challenges to run, ski, cycle or walk; nutrition counseling; and annual medical checkups. At last year’s medical checkup, an associate was diagnosed with an early stage of cancer and was able to receive timely medical intervention to save her life.

You + Me: Each TakeCare activity serves as a team-building event, bringing associates from all departments together to share in the fun. Last summer, associates at the Sheraton Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport Hotel were invited to conduct their summer parties together, including a “dance battle” between executive committee teams. They had so much fun, the Novy Arbat team now starts every town hall meeting with a dance.

We: Many of the TakeCare activities include donations to local charities. Last year the TakeCare team ran in the “Wings for Life World Run” in Kolomna, Russia. The hotel teamed with other Marriott-branded hotels in Moscow to participate and raise funds to help find a cure for spinal cord injuries.

According to General Manager Cornelia Brinkman, “TakeCare sets us apart from our competitors. It’s unique for a workplace to actually say ‘you are someone worth caring about.’” Eugenia Mardenskaya believes it has completely changed their outlook on the week: “We don’t come into work on Monday wondering when Friday is going to come. We enjoy the moments we have here!”
