Norma Noble, J. Willard Marriott Award of Excellence

Norma Noble
Complex TakeCare Coordinator
Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort
Le Méridien Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

There is no such thing as a typical day for Norma Noble, Complex TakeCare Coordinator for the Sheraton and Le Méridien in Abu Dhabi. Every day is different, depending on the needs of the more than 550 associates. She attends to their immediate health concerns and arranges for regular medical checkups, screenings and TakeCare activities. She also helps navigate the legal health insurance and visa requirements for each associate.

Norma’s dedication to her associates and their health has never wavered in her 25 years with the hotel complex. During an associate party, the hotel’s Director of Finance experienced a heart attack. Norma immediately called the ambulance but realized it would not get to the hotel in time. The city streets were blocked in every direction due to a national soccer team celebration. She put the associate in a car with a driver and proceeded to walk ahead of the car, directing traffic and diverting the crowd so the car could get through. While en route, Norma called the hospital to personally request a cardiologist to attend to her patient upon arrival. The associate was saved, and just in time. The doctor informed Norma that her patient would not have survived had they arrived even minutes later. Though the Director of Finance has moved on to another hotel within the city, Norma still helps to make his follow-up cardiologist appointments.

Because most of the complex’s workforce are expatriates, many are away from family and have little support. Francis Ambatt, Complex Director of Human Resources, says, “Norma is a friend to everyone. Her approachable and motherly nature makes associates comfortable around her. Most associates call her ‘momma.’”

As a cancer survivor, Norma understands that dedication and compassion are essential to a healthy and happy workforce. She says, “We need to be reminded that life is really fragile and uncertain. We are a family here.”
