Royston Devaraj, J. Willard Marriott Award of Excellence

Royston Devaraj
Group Sales Executive
Melbourne Marriott Hotel
Melbourne, Australia

Royston Devaraj first heard about Marriott’s founding core value “putting people first” at a hotel opening in his native country of India. He was intrigued by the idea but wondered if a company as big as Marriott could really measure up to such a lofty ideal. A short time later he moved to Melbourne, Australia. He was offered the role of Houseman at the Melbourne Marriott Hotel and quickly learned that “putting people first” was a genuine way of life.

Thirteen years later, Royston now serves as Group Sales Executive, working with Marriott global contacts. He likens his work as “the beginning and the end” of customer relationships. From the moment a group considers booking with the Melbourne Marriott until the event is over, Royston tirelessly works to create a positive experience for guests. “I work every day to portray the Marriott values to our guests. I am genuinely excited about my job and love to build relationships with our clients. That’s how we earn the right to ask for repeat business.”

Despite working long hours and commuting three hours each day, Royston never hesitates to welcome group clients himself. Once he had a Formula One Grand Prix team arriving after 1 a.m. Without hesitation, Royston arranged to personally greet the group upon their arrival. Ensuring a positive experience from start to finish was critical to closing a three-year contract with the client.

Grant Gray, Director of Sales & Marketing, appreciates Royston’s passion for putting people first and being an unfailing example of exceptional customer service. “Royston epitomizes the character of a Marriott associate and brings our values to life daily. On any given day, you can find Royston unloading group bags, assisting with check-ins, helping banquet operations to turn a meeting room, or covering our reservations team in times of need — all without question and with a smile on his face.”
Award of Excellence 2018 winner, Royston Devaraj.
