Trey Whiddon is always on the move. As General Manager at the Courtyard San Antonio Downtown/Market Square, he believes in “managing by moving.”

As the longest tenured associate in Courtyard brand history, Trey could write the book on “hands-on” management. He started his career just out of college as a front desk clerk at the Dallas Marriott Market Center. In the early 1980s, he heard about Marriott’s new lodging concept and thought he might be a good fit for the growing Courtyard brand. He moved his way around the country, helping to open and manage Courtyard hotels, until he came to San Antonio.

He looked forward to returning to South Texas where he spent many of his childhood summers on his grandparents’ ranch, which he has since inherited. He likens his work on the ranch to his work as a general manager — always on the move and always something to improve.

Trey is passionate about training and developing his associates to their full potential. Brianna Brown, Operations Supervisor at the hotel, says, “He treats each associate like a member of his own family. The environment that Trey inspires is a one-of-a-kind experience that our guests feel, as well. His involvement with each individual department strengthens our team and allows all of us to grow and learn in our own ways.”

He’s passionate about investing in his associates because he takes great pride in their success. When hiring and developing new talent, he has one piece of advice: “Marriott is a great place to work. This is a career, not a job. Invest in your career.”

Several years ago, when the Courtyard brand began disassembling their signature gazebos from each location, Trey had one reassembled at his ranch. He looks at it as not just a piece of brand history, but as part of his own history, too.
