Hotel History

In 1901 Cortina was a small mountain village under the flag of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when Emilia and Giuseppe Menardi opened the Palace Hotel Cristallo. It was designed by the master architect Gustavo Ghiretti, inspired by art nouveau in honour of noble Viennese traditions, and has overlooked the valley ever since, standing out in white against the bright green meadows. Its elegance, its privileged position on the edge of the woods and breathtaking view of the Tofane mountains, together with the great dedication of the Menardi couple, soon made it one of the most sought-after international destinations. The earliest hotel registers, in fact, already contain the signatures of famous personalities, such as Leo Tolstoy, and guests from every part of the world.

The Great War: The First World War was a tragic blow that ended the golden life of that era in 1915. The hotel was set up as a military hospital, a use that left it almost completely destroyed.

With the post-war reconstruction, a new era of tourism began in Cortina in 1947. Careful renovation work restored the Cristallo to its old splendour and, under the management of Leo Menardi and his wife Ofelia Zardini, the hotel once again welcomed guests in that elegant and exclusive atmosphere for which it had always been recognised.

A Destination for Winter Sports

Leo Menardi had the wisdom, sensitivity and organisational skills to anticipate trends and understand and cater to the most extravagant desires. On the sporting level, he brought ice hockey and curling to Cortina, he also promoted the Cristallo Bob Club team and, above all, the legendary “Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti” (Dolomites Gold Cup), the race that brought the best drivers in the world, and the first Ferraris, to the hairpin bends of the Alps. Already the chosen home of winter sports, Cortina was the first Italian mountain resort to host the Olympic Games in 1956, which brought it so much worldwide attention that it became one of the most fashionable and popular destinations throughout the 1960s and 70s.

A Noble World

Leo and Ofelia Menardi passed on the baton to their son Rinaldo, who was ready to pick up and interpret the latest trends of the younger generation. He opened the Monkey in the Cristallo, which soon became one of the most popular venues and a cradle of the great loves and passions of the golden youth of the time. These were the years of protest against bourgeois respectability, unconventional fashion and nightlife and Monkey organised unforgettable parties and events. Klaus Kinski, Ira Furstenberg, Philips Niarkos, the Princes of Liechtenstein, Shirley Bassey, Brigitte Bardot and Luca Cordero of Montezemolo... were just a few of its many frequent visitors, which included the offspring of noble families, industrialists, actors and artists who electrified those endless nights.

History of the Hotel

The Expensive Jewel Made in Cortina

They were carefree and richly creative years, during which Cortina and the Cristallo began to be used as the setting for numerous films: first of all “The Pink Panther”, filmed in 1963 by Blake Edwards, which brought David Niven, Peter Sellers, Capucine and Claudia Cardinale to Cortina. It was then the turn of Von Ryan's Express, with Frank Sinatra, James Bond Agent 007, “Vacanze di Natale” by the Vanzina brothers and then TV commercials and dramas. The history of entertainment is linked to the history of the Cristallo, a charming, natural and fashionable setting that is picture perfect.

History of the Hotel

Hotel Cristallo was closed for several years in the 90s, but the allure of this paradise, which preserved memories of a glittering past, remained unchanged and stirred the imagination of Bolognese entrepreneur Paolo Gualandi, who decided to pick up the thread of a magical history that had been interrupted too abruptly.

Hotel Cristallo Hotel Spa & Golf reopened after 10 years, bringing an air of novelty to Cortina, together with a free and easy, elegant and dynamic opulence that reawakened the joyful spirit of its most beautiful years.

120 Years of Cristallo

In 1901 the Menardi family began to write the incredible story of Palace Hotel Cristallo. Inspired by Art Nouveau, the Cristallo became one of the most sought-after destinations and hosted famous personalities of the international jet set over the years in its magical atmosphere, overlooking the valley ever since. The Menardis wonderfully managed the hotel through the golden age, interrupted only by the World Wars. 2001 is considered a rebirth: the Gualandi family brought the hotel back to its former glory, and Cristallo Palace became Cristallo, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa. After 120 years, Cristallo Resort & Spa is celebrating its anniversary, and wants to share this special occasion with you. A collection of memorable experiences awaits, as you take part in a legendary journey through time and taste, with the anniversary dinner designed by our Executive Chef Marco Pinelli as the icing on the cake.

Tagliatelle 120

The best stories are born from a happy encounter. Like when, in 2001, the Gualandi family from Bologna joined forces with the Cristallo Resort & Spa, Cortina d'Ampezzo. And so, to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth of this symbol of Ampezzo hospitality, homemade organic durum wheat tagliatelle, Dolomite ragout and Feltre walnut cream were added to the menu. Chef Marco Pinelli has created a dish that is a perfect union between the Dolomites and Bolognese tradition, involving partners of excellence. The recipe has been included in the Il Gazebo restaurant menu and it will soon be possible to purchase the limited edition box containing all the ingredients to relive the atmosphere of the Anniversary and the refined flavours of the Cristallo Resort & Spa at home.

"Cristallo120": the Anniversary Cocktail

Two Prestigious Stories, One Great Passion

To celebrate our 120th anniversary, we have teamed up with Comte de Montagne, the ambassador of authentic Aube champagne, to create a commemorative bottle with a dedicated label, perfect for celebrating this great achievement. Two companies that have made history and will continue to do so, united by their respect for tradition, their passion for what they do and their quest for authenticity and excellence. To celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Cristallo Resort and Spa, we have also created a special anniversary cocktail. In addition to the Champagne Comte de Montaigne Brut Limited Edition, the ingredients include Rubinelli Vajol Brandy produced in collaboration with Villa Zarri, "Le Vaglie" Bitter from the Santa Barbara winery, homemade rosemary syrup from the Cristallo Lounge Bar and lime juice, artfully mixed and served with a blackberry and raspberry skewer and a sprig of rosemary: a cocktail that expresses the gourmet tradition of the area and the hotel through the senses.

A Parade of Flags

A "parade" of flags, symbolizing the unity of peoples and the values of sport, transformed the façade of the Cristallo Resort & Spa into a large canvas signed by the eclectic Milanese artist Mario Arlati. In these complex historical times, a touch of optimism is needed to light the way. And so light turns out to be one of the leitmotifs of the anniversary.

Local News & Events

Unique handcrafted pieces to celebrate the hotel's 120th anniversary. In July, we inaugurated an exhibition of clothes, accessories, jewellery, design objects and many unique pieces that aim to highlight the work of Italy's best craftswomen, symbols of a style, a manufacturing tradition, a sartorial skill appreciated all over the world.

The works are all original, made exclusively to celebrate the hotel's 120th anniversary. An initiative that highlights the Made in Italy label and the particular sensitivity of women, in a place devoted to beauty.

For its 120th anniversary, the Cristallo decided to treat itself and its guests to a real soundtrack. The soundtrack was created by Smoma, a quartet of versatile artists and historic collaborators of Radio Montecarlo. A total of 12 songs, one for each decade that the Cristallo has lived through, like the stages of a journey through time. Famous songs from every era have been reinterpreted in many different styles, dressed in completely new atmospheres, with acoustic and electronic sounds. From September, you will also be able to listen to our soundtrack on the best streaming music platforms. Stay tuned.

The close collaboration between the Cristallo Ultimate Spa and the Transvital line of treatments continues. Transvital, with its solid scientific basis, is firmly rooted in the excellence of Swiss cosmetic tradition. For the anniversary of the Cristallo Resort & Spa, a special product has been launched: the Limited Edition of Transvital Regenerating Cream, the top-of-the-line product. This exclusive edition celebrates 120 years of beauty and contains a discount code to be used at the hotel's Spa.
