Sister Cities at the JW Marriott
Commissioned by the JW Marriott Grand Rapids, photographer Dan Watts, spent weeks photographing in our six sister cities to create the truly remarkable collection of photographs on permanent display in both the public and private areas of the hotel. These photos capture the essence of our sister cities and allow our guests to share the rich cultures of Omihachiman, Japan; Zapopan, Mexico; Ga District in Ghana; Perugia, Italy; and Bielsko Biala, Poland. Enjoy them and be inspired yourself – possibly to take another journey and experience in person the influence and inspiration these cities offer.
A WorldWide Connection
Sister Cities
From Omihachiman, Japan to Bielsko Biala, Poland, six cities, six cultures are represented across our property from meeting rooms, to art installations we are proud to represent beauty from all over the globe.

Grand Rapids Sister Cities International
In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower designed a program to enhance relationships among cities in the United States and the rest of the world. The desired outcome of this program was to gain knowledge and understanding of foreign cities through community exchanges of cultural and ethnic ideas.

History of Marriott
At Marriott, we never stop searching for inventive ways to serve our customers, provide opportunities for our associates, and grow our business. The company that began as a nine-seat A&W root beer stand is recognized today as a top employer and for its superior business operations.
The Marriott name took root in American business and history in 1927 when J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott opened their first A&W Root Beer stand in Washington, D.C. During the next three decades, the Marriott's grew their foodservice business to include new in-flight service and several new eateries.
For the next fifty-eight years—until his death in 1985—J. Willard Marriott rarely rested. Whether adding locations, perfecting procedures or expanding into new enterprises, Marriott breathed, ate, and lived his company. Even when his oldest son, J. Willard “Bill” Marriott, Jr., was named CEO and took over most major responsibilities, he could not bring himself to retire. A true hands-on manager, he thoroughly enjoyed visiting Marriott’s increasingly exotic locations, as well as spending time with the ever-growing ranks of associates who, in his mind, were the secret of his company’s success. “Take care of your employees and they’ll take care of your customers,” he constantly advised Marriott’s managers.
Today, Marriott International, Inc. is a leading worldwide hospitality company with nearly 2,800 operating units in the United States and 67 other countries and territories.
