Established in 1901, and Elegantly Transformed for its 125th Anniversary
The Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach has completed its renovation in a remarkable transformation that honors its illustrious legacy as the First Lady of Waikiki. The resort's three wings and Historic Lobby are now welcoming guests with beautifully refreshed accommodations and gathering spaces.
Design Philosophy
Inspired by the healing and restorative properties of Hamohamo and specifically Ulukou, the historic area of Waikiki where the Moana stands, design elements fascilitate rejuvenating guest experience that specifically tie back to the natural elements that have made this area so desirable over the years. Patterns weaving in motifs highlighting kou lei, the movement of the ocean, and the Banyan Tree’s majestic aerial roots create new visuals, unifying the distinct wings together into the singular Moana Surfrider experience.
Refined Elegance
Historic Lobby Refresh
The Moana Surfrider’s historic lobby has debuted with a refreshed sophisticated, tranquil aesthetic while staying true to the space’s colonial-style Victorian architecture. Graceful, curved seating vignettes welcome guests to the light-filled space, and accent tables play off the soaring ceiling's curved chandelier fixtures. Notable upgrades include newly refinished original wood flooring, custom-designed transitional furnishings, and bespoke art pieces by Kristen Reyno (Lola Pilar Hawaii), incorporating botanical elements of the hotel's Banyan tree. The front desk now features elegant check-in pods and a striking sculptural lighting fixture inspired by the courtyard's tree, which is on the National Register of Historic Trees. Adjacent to the lobby, the refreshed Vintage 1901 space features new furnishings that transition seamlessly from morning functionality to evening socializing.
Three Transformed Wings, Three Distinct Experiences
Heritage Space Enhancements
The Moana Surfrider’s guest room renovations encompass all three wings of the hotel. Each wing’s design provides unique guest experiences and is intended to tell a story about the restorative properties of the resort’s natural environment and the significance of its location throughout history.
Tower Wing
The transformed Tower Wing now offers guests an environment of serene modern beach luxury. Home to the resort’s most highly coveted and spacious accommodations with many ocean, beachfront, and Leahi (Diamond Head State Monument) views, the Tower Wing’s new guest rooms showcase clean, rhythmic patterns, warm metallic accents, and a calming palette echoing the various shades of Waikiki's ocean views. New features include a custom seating and dining nook, floor-to-ceiling lanai doors, and new balcony furnishings for indoor-outdoor living.
Banyan Wing
Preserving historic character while embracing modern comforts, the Banyan Wing remains a beloved favorite among Moana Surfrider guests. As was common for the time, each room varies slightly, offering its own charm. The wing’s guest rooms and suites feature views of Diamond Head, the historic courtyard banyan tree, or Waikiki skyline.
