Once heralded as the largest retailer west of the Mississippi, Meier & Frank established their flagship store and headquarters in Portland in 1909.

Open and airy, our 1,536 square foot Meier & Frank Suite embodies the style of a bygone era with tufted velvet chairs, a deco style chandelier and over-sized windows.

The Nines has curated a collection of more than 400 unique pieces of local Oregon artwork, including sculptures, paintings and custom installations.

Patrick McNearney began his hospitality career as a Guest Services Supervisor for Winegardner & Hammons in Ohio. Patrick’s life motto is “vacation is a verb,” and he feels grateful to live in a city that offers endless opportunities to explore. When he’s not at work, you’ll find him at a BurnCycle class, a vegan potluck or exploring a new Portland destination.
As the premier department store in Portland, Meier & Frank was once the place to see and be seen in the city.
In 2009, The Nines opened in the top nine floors of this historic building as one of Portland’s premier luxury hotels. The original exterior of the building was retained, while a seven-story light-filled atrium was created to showcase our beautiful city views. The architects had a nostalgic, modern approach to the renovation - infusing the space with elements of art and fashion, as well as eclectic nods to the Meier & Frank’s retail past. In line with our sustainable values, the building is also LEED Silver Certified.
The name “the Nines” pays homage to our roots as a beacon of “dressed to the nines” fashion. Like the original Meier & Frank, we're dedicated to providing impeccable service and an elevated customer experience.
A Lobby Unlike Any Other
The shared spaces at The Nines include dynamic and diverse installations from local artists. From a 35-foot LED chandelier, to abstract images of Portland, our lobby, restaurants and library are decorated with works from local artists including Melody Owen, Matt McCormick and Gus Van Sant.
One-of-a-Kind Guest Rooms
Each guest room at The Nines features a one-of-a-kind monotype silkscreen, created by a student at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. The monotypes utilize materials like crumpled paper to create textured shapes, while the silkscreen prints build imagery through a series of circles and rectangles, creating optical art.
