Explore Stunning Ruins

Riserva di Duino

Take in the view or hike the beautiful Sentiero Rilke path along the clifftops. Duino’s star attraction is the famous Castello di Duino. Perched precariously above the waves below, with views that stretch far across the bay, this ancient castle has stood here since 1389. Spend an afternoon exploring its ancient architecture, visiting the on-site museum, and uncovering the eclectic collection inside.

Castello di Miramare

Overlooking the sea, the Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park with valuable botanical species. A noble residence commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, was built between 1856 and 1860 by Archduke Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico. Characterised by the "white towers", it is a prime example of nineteenth-century architecture and a revisited construction of a medieval fortress.

Slovenia

A glittering paradise alongside the North Adriatic Sea, Slovenia’s natural beauty knows no limits. This is a country that seems to have been purpose-built for outdoor pursuits, a place where you can enjoy world-class skiing, cycling, sailing and hiking, or head to the unspoilt beaches to relax in total tranquillity. Slovenia is Italy’s closest neighbour on its eastern side, which makes it incredibly easy to access from Portopiccolo. Ljubljana, the country’s beautiful capital, is just an hour north by car. The scenic route, which takes in mountains, plains, and forest, is almost worth the trip alone. But it’s out in the countryside that you’ll find the real Slovenia. Fast-moving rivers cry out to be rafted, epic peaks beg to be scaled, and an extensive network of cycle paths make for easy exploration.

Venice

Head west from Portopiccolo, just two hours’ drive on the A4 motorway, and you arrive in Venice. A city of grandeur, culture, and romance, the charms of the Venetian capital need little introduction. Yet no matter how well you think you know these streets, Venice always has something to surprise and where magic feels a little more real when discovering a new is only ever around the corner.

Croatia

From the peaks of the Dinaric Alps to the sparkling sapphire of its Adriatic waters, Croatia’s natural beauty is unmatched. This is a country of contrasts, filled with ancient towns and vibrant modern festivals, unspoiled beaches, and thrilling cities. With a friendly culture and some of the world’s finest sailing to enjoy, it’s easy to understand why Croatia is fast becoming one of Europe’s most desirable locations. The Balkan nation lies just a few hours drive from Portopiccolo, south through Slovenia, along the picturesque coastal road. It can also be easily reached by boat, with an array of marinas that make it easy to break up the journey for those who prefer to take their time.
