History of Ventura Beach

Mission San Buena Ventura was founded in 1782 and is named after Saint Bonaventure, giving Ventura the nickname the “city of good fortune.” Ventura’s first courthouse, wharf, bank, and public library were built almost a century later, all in the same year: 1873. Many of these buildings remain in Ventura’s downtown today and can be visited as historical sites.
