Javanese Cooking for the Community: Why It Matters

Poverty and Hunger in Java

Despite recent economic growth and prosperity in the region, Indonesia remains a lower-middle-income country and hunger continues to be a significant issue.

Yogyakarta is known as a cultural hub of fine arts, with many natural wonders and its people are renowned for their hospitable nature. Sadly, this has not translated to economic prosperity and households still suffer from poverty and hunger.

Yogyakarta is the poorest province of Indonesia with a poverty rate 11.8% higher than the national average. A lack of infrastructure affects many facets of everyday life for families, from sanitation and quality of water, to food security.

Javanese Cooking for the Community: The Experience

Volunteer at the Yogyakarta Community Kitchen

Sheraton Yogyakarta invites guests to forge connections with the locals by learning how to cook in the Javanese style and sharing these food with the local community.

Every weekend, guests are invited to join our culinary team for an authentic lesson on how to prepare and serve food in the traditional Javanese way. Guests will then serve the food to needy community members. The ingredients are all locally sourced, making sure that the community benefits from this activity, as well as ensuring that the produce is top quality. Our chef will provide insight into the origin and cultural significance of each dish cooked, and the activity’s carbon footprint is kept to a minimum by using eco-friendly packaging for the meals.

  • Javanese flavors – Learn how to cook and serve food in the authentic Javanese way
  • Feed the community – Take the food you have prepared and serve it to those in the community who need it most

Javanese Cooking for the Community: The Impact

Feed Your Soul and the Community

The experience offers guests the opportunity to both learn about the culture of Yogyakarta through its food, as well as helping those in need by serving them the food that has been prepared.

Through this experience, we are also supporting the local economy of Yogyakarta by sourcing all ingredients locally. It assists those who cannot afford to eat on their own in the community, ensuring that they don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Guests can also sponsor a meal package that provides for 10 people.
