Cairo

A city of vibrant contrasts, Cairo is both ancient and modern––and everything in between. While ancient Egyptian monuments like the pyramids at Giza may be the main attraction for many hotel guests, Cairo has much more to offer than mummies and hieroglyphics.

Beat the heat and see the great pyramids and the Great Sphinx at Giza on camelback early in the day. During the afternoon, examine ancient artifacts indoors at the Egyptian Museum. Later, make sure to visit the Babylon Fortress, the oldest part of this very old city, and explore the Cairo of 10th century Egyptian Christians at the St. George, Egypt’s famous cylindrical church. Plus, don’t miss the beautiful Blue Mosque, built in 1347. The mosque gets its name thanks in part to the iconic blue Iznik tiles used to decorate the interior.

Take a break during your hotel stay in Cairo and tee-off at one of the oldest golf courses in Africa, the Gezira Sporting Club, or haggle to your heart’s content at the Khan El-Khalili Bazaar. Afterward, you can relax with a cup of traditional tea from Fishawi’s Café or stop in at any of the myriad shops near your accommodations in downtown Cairo. Later, savor Egyptian dishes like koshary (a mixture of pasta, chickpeas, and tomato sauce) at renowned restaurants like Abu El-Sid and Abou Tarek Koshary.
