Committee for Excellence


In 2003, Marriott’s Board of Directors established the Committee for Excellence to set significant diversity objectives and monitor progress at every level of the corporation. The Committee is chaired by board member Debra L. Lee, chairman and CEO of BET Networks. Additional members include Board members: George Muñoz, principal of Muñoz Investment Banking Group, LLC; and William J. Shaw, vice chairman of Marriott International; and Marriott senior executives representing various disciplines throughout the company.

Debra L. LeeDebra Lee has been a director of Marriott International since 2004 and is the current Chair of the Committee for Excellence. Ms. Lee is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BET Networks, a media and entertainment subsidiary of Viacom, Inc. that owns and operates Black Entertainment Television and several other ventures. She joined BET in 1986 and served in a number of executive posts before ascending to her present position in January 2006, including President and Chief Executive Officer from June 2005, President and Chief Operating Officer from 1995 to May 2005, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, and Vice President and General Counsel.

Jimmie Walton Paschall

Jimmie Walton PaschallJimmie Walton Paschall is global diversity officer and senior vice president of external affairs for Marriott International. In this capacity, Ms. Paschall spearheads the company’s diversity outreach both inside and outside the United States, broadening the footprint of Marriott’s award-winning diversity initiatives among the company’s workforce, owners and franchisees, suppliers and customers. Paschall also oversees the company’s support of the Marriott Foundation and its national “Bridges…from school to work” program, which trains and links young people with disabilities to productive employment with companies across the country.

Ray Bennett
Senior Vice President, Lodging Development, Eastern Region

Ray BennettRay Bennett is senior vice president, lodging development for select service and extended stay brands, Eastern region and leader of Marriott’s Diversity Ownership Initiative, a program developed in 2005 to increase the number of minority- and women-owned hotels. Most recently, Mr. Bennett held the position of area vice president of lodging development for Courtyard, Fairfield Inn, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites and Towneplace Suites with responsibility for New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. He has also served as vice president of operations for Marriott’s Distribution Services. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing six distribution centers totaling $850 million in sales annually. In 2004, he transitioned into lodging and held several hotel management positions in northern Virginia including resident manager of the Crystal Gateway Marriott and general manager of the Residence Inn Pentagon City. Ray Bennett joined Marriott International from Pepsico Bottling Group in 2001.

Bill Hartwig

Bill Hartwig Bill Hartwig is vice president, global supplier relations for Marriott International, Inc. In this role, Mr. Hartwig provides strategic direction and executive management to Marriott’s procurement function worldwide. He leads the relationship between Marriott and Avendra (Marriott’s key contracted centralized procurement supplier) in North America, as well as develops additional procurement business opportunities for Marriott around the world as we continue our global growth. Since Mr. Hartwig joined Marriott in 1985, he has held several positions within our lodging brands and businesses including Market Director for Courtyard and Fairfield Inn, General Manager of the Downers Grove Marriott Suites, Vice President and General Manager for HomeSolutions by Marriott, and most recently as General Manager of the Shenyang Marriott Hotel. He led the first Marriott-branded hotel in China to become market leader and gain official five-star tourism status within the first year of operation.

Kathleen Matthews

Kathleen Matthews Kathleen Matthews is Executive Vice President, Global Communications and Public Affairs for Marriott International. She is responsible for the company's external and internal communications, including global brand and market public relations, community relations, diversity initiatives, corporate communications and government affairs. Prior to joining Marriott in 2006, Ms. Matthews was a distinguished news anchor, reporter and producer in Washington, D.C. for 25 years. She served as anchor of WJLA's ABC-7 News, and hosted Capital Sunday, a half-hour talk show focusing on current events. She was also host and executive editor of "Working Woman," a nationally syndicated magazine show.

She is responsible for the performance and growth of a new division that combines the United Kingdom, Ireland and Continental Europe. Ms. McPherson is also a corporate officer for Marriott International. Ms. McPherson is also a corporate officer for Marriott International. Prior to her current position, Ms. McPherson served as executive vice president of global sales and marketing. She joined Marriott in 1986. She was named one of the top “Women Who Mean Business” by the Washington Business Journal, honoring the region’s most influential business women in November 2005.

George Muñoz George Muñoz has been a director of Marriott International since 2002. Mr. Muñoz was the first Chair of the Committee for Excellence. He is a principal in the Washington, D.C.-based firm Muñoz Investment Banking Group, LLC. Mr. Muñoz is also a partner in the Chicago-based law firm Tobin, Petkus & Muñoz, LLC. He served as president and Chief Executive Officer of Overseas Private Investment Corporation from 1997 to January 2001. Mr. Muñoz was Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department from 1993 until 1997. Mr. Muñoz is a certified public accountant and an attorney.

Harry J. Pearce

Harry J. Pearce Harry Pearce is Chairman of Nortel Networks Corporation and Chairman of MDU Resources Group, Inc. He was Chairman of Hughes Electronics Corporation, a subsidiary of General Motors Corporation, from May 2001 until the sale by General Motors of its interest in Hughes in December 2003. He had served on the Hughes Electronics Corporation board since 1992. Mr. Pearce is a member of the board of directors of The New York Bone Marrow Foundation and President and a director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Research Foundation. He also serves on the board of trustees of Northwestern University. Mr. Pearce has been a director of the Company or its predecessors since 1995.

David A. Rodriguez assumed the role of executive vice president – global human resources for Marriott International in 2006.  Mr. Rodriguez was appointed a corporate officer in 2000, and in 2004, to the board of directors’ Committee for Excellence. Dr. Rodriguez joined Marriott International and assumed the role of senior vice president - staffing & development in 1998.  In 2003, he was appointed executive vice president – human resources for Marriott Lodging.

William J. Shaw

William J. Shaw Mr. Shaw served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Marriott International or its predecessors 1997-2009. He joined Marriott Corporation in 1974, was elected Corporate Controller in 1979 and a Vice President in 1982. In 1986, Mr. Shaw was elected Senior Vice President-Finance and Treasurer of Marriott Corporation. He was elected Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Marriott Corporation in April 1988. In 1992 he was elected President of the Marriott Service Group. Mr. Shaw serves on the board of trustees of the University of Notre Dame. He also serves on the NCAA Leadership Advisory Board. Mr. Shaw has been a director of the Company or its predecessors since 1997.
