Good Travel in North Ari Atoll, Maldives | W Hotels

North Ari Atoll

Moving beyond the traditional classroom concept while keeping the educational aspects, the first part of this immersive learning experience brings guests on our resort's sailing yacht—Horizon, where they attend an in-depth marine biology class detailing the variety of reef fish species often found in the region, the fundamentals of coral reefs, and their role in supporting marine life. The class is then followed by a one-hour guided snorkeling session around our house reef to see marine life in action, as well as our resort’s landmark coral restoration initiative, Sea of Stars. Here, guests observe up-close the recent installation of 400 reef stars—hexagonal underwater structures that provide a stable base for coral growth—with 6,000 coral fragments representing multiple native species, and understand first-hand the role they play in safeguarding the Maldivian coral reefs. Under the guidance of the marine biologist, guests are able to contribute directly to the resort's ongoing conservation efforts by taking part in a hands-on reef star cleaning session. By turning the ocean into the teacher and allowing guests to learn through observing and taking real action to contribute to ongoing coral restoration projects, this experience allow guests to understand deeply the importance of marine conservation and how they can play a part.
