The glitter of the Strip is surrounded by natural desert beauty.
From class to kitsch, the 4-mile-long section of Las Vegas Boulevard known as “the Strip” is home to luxe hotels, celebrity-chef restaurants, nightlife and shopping. Spot a volcano, an Eiffel Tower, an Egyptian sphinx, Venetian canals and amusement park rides in a single walk. But you’ll find there’s more to Las Vegas when you head out in just about any direction — discover lakes, a Mediterranean-style spa, canyons and mountains. Fishing, hiking and boating may not come to mind when you think of Sin City, but the city is rich in natural beauty and outdoor activities.

Downtown Las Vegas (DTLV)

Overview

Downtown Las Vegas, about 5 miles from the Strip, is a walkable area where much of the entertainment lives outdoors. It’s casual and less glamorous than the Strip, but the approachable atmosphere makes an impact whether you’re zip lining over Fremont Street or enjoying the dazzling sound and light show of the Fremont Street Experience. Many visitors prefer the downtown ambience of the original Las Vegas, where the gambling (and drinks) are cheaper.

Summerlin, Nevada

Overview

This neighborhood presents something somewhat unexpected for this boisterous city: an outdoor haven for fresh-air seekers. Set on Las Vegas’ western edge, Summerlin’s 150 miles of trails are favorites among local hikers. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is nearby, with rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking and picnicking areas. While Summerlin draws a lot of day-trippers, it's worth your time to linger — especially over a wellness treatment at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa.

The Arts District

Overview

About halfway between the Strip and Downtown, the Arts District is where Las Vegas’ creative side thrives (think: studios, galleries, independent bars and boutiques). There’s even an antiques mall where you can bring home keepsakes from historic Las Vegas hotels and casinos. If you’re there on the first Friday of the month, there’s an open event with artists, musicians and food vendors. In the Arts Factory, a variety of studios, performing arts spaces and galleries are under one roof, and you can interact with the artists as they work.
