Overfishing is Threatening the Blue Swimmer Crab

The Blue Swimmer Crab Bank: Why It Matters

Thailand is a country surrounded by beautiful coastline and a vibrant fishing industry. Sadly, overfishing in the region is threatening Thailand’s harmony with the ocean and its marine life.

The blue swimmer crab plays a key part in the lives of Pranburi’s community. As a fishing settlement, the blue swimmer crab is a major source of income for its residents, but poor management has resulted in the depletion of this once abundant resource. As one of Thailand’s most exported seafood items and a large contributor to the economy, low stocks of the blue swimmer crab can put livelihoods of local communities at risk. The crabs are also an important part of the ecosystem, helping keep the local environment balanced, preventing algal blooms, and overpopulation of smaller sea life.

The Blue Swimmer Crab Bank: The Experience

In partnership with Pranburi Crab Bank, we invite guests to join a hands-on experience to help conserve the blue swimmer crab.

Guests will take a trip to the Pranburi Crab Bank, where they will be taught about the significance of the blue swimmer crab – not only to the local economy but to the restoration of local marine ecosystems. Guests will then participate in the recovery of local blue swimmer crab stocks by helping the Crab Bank’s staff feed juvenile crabs, before helping to release hundreds of these precious creatures into the wild.

Sustainable Way of Fishing the Blue Swimmer Crab

The Blue Swimmer Crab Bank: The Impact

By helping to increase the number of blue swimmer crabs on the Thailand coastline, a more sustainable relationship can be maintained between the fishing industry and the local marine ecosystem.

The blue swimmer crab has the ability to reproduce all year round, with each clutch of eggs they produce numbering in the millions. The Pranburi Crab Bank uses this information in tandem with their approach of nursing crab larvae to a later stage in life to make sure more crabs survive into adulthood. Guests will help in this process, taking part in tasks such as feeding and releasing the crab  into the ocean.

The increased number of crabs, paired with the education of local fishermen, expects to result in a more sustainable fishing practice that will benefit the long-term health of Thailand’s marine ecosystem.
