      The festive season usually starts in mid to late November and lasts until early January. Most Christmas markets open around November 20.

      Most markets, such as the Christkindlmarkt at Cathedral Square or the Hellbrunn Advent Magic, remain open until just before Christmas — some even until New Year’s.

      No, entry to most markets is free of charge.

      Highlights include the Salzburg Advent Singing at the Great Festival Hall, the Hellbrunn Advent Magic, and various Advent concerts held in the city’s historic churches. 

      The Krampuslauf (Krampus Run) is a centuries-old Alpine tradition that takes place in early December, around St. Nicholas Day (December 5–6). Locals dressed as “Krampus” — horned, fur-covered figures — parade through the streets with bells and torches, accompanying St. Nicholas as he rewards good children. The event combines folklore, artistry, and festive excitement, and is a truly unforgettable part of Salzburg’s Advent season.

      Yes! The Hellbrunn Advent Magic features a children’s post office, carousel rides, and craft workshops. Ice skating in the Volksgarten is also a local favorite.

      Plenty! Enjoy a walk through the Old Town or along the Mönchberg, visit one of Salzburg’s many museums, or take a trip up to Hohensalzburg Fortress for breathtaking winter views.
