    Founded more than 120 years ago when Richard Starr forged a route through the west Tucson Mountains, The Club at Starr Pass is rooted in a spirit of exploration that still defines the experience today. The property features three distinct nine-hole courses designed by Arnold Palmer, each routed to embrace the natural terrain. Pioneer’s sixth fairway follows Starr’s original trail, offering a unique connection to the land’s history and a signature moment in every round.

    The Club at Starr Pass hosted the Tucson Open from 1987 to 1996, highlighted by Phil Mickelson’s memorable win as an amateur in 1991—a defining moment that put the course on the national stage.

    Today, the course is known for its fun, risk-reward design, where strategy and playability come together against the backdrop of the Sonoran Desert’s natural beauty. Each round is as much about the setting as the golf, with frequent sightings of roadrunners, coyotes, bobcats, mule deer, and javelinas adding to the character of the experience. It’s golf that feels adventurous yet refined—true to its heritage and unmistakably Starr Pass.

    Phil Mickelson’s PGA Wins at Starr Pass

    Starr Pass has origins dating back to 1884, when Richard Starr established a stagecoach trail through the Tucson Mountains — this trail, linking Tucson to the mining boomtown Quijotoa about 70 miles to the southwest, follows what is now the 6th fairway of the Pioneer Course. The golf course officially opened in 1986, with its original 18 holes designed by Craig Stadler and Bob Cupp; those holes are now known as the Pioneer and Gambler courses. Starting in 1987, Starr Pass hosted the Tucson Open (a PGA Tour event) for several years, through 1996. Notably, in 1991, a young amateur Phil Mickelson won the Tucson Open here — a rare amateur victory. 

    In 2005, Arnold Palmer designed an additional 9‐hole course, commonly called the “Palmer 9”, expanding Starr Pass from 18 to 27 holes.
