The Majestic Story

A Rich and Influential Heritage

Built in 1932, the original Hotel Majestic was commissioned by the Trustees of the Estate of Loke Wan Tho, the scion of renowned businessman and philanthropist Loke Yew. The design was entrusted to the esteemed Dutch architectural firm Keyes and Dowdeswell, who conceived a building that masterfully blended the grandeur of Neo-Classical form with the sleek modernity of Art Deco detail. Perched upon a commanding hilltop site, the 51-room hotel enjoyed a splendid prospect overlooking another of Kuala Lumpur’s most famous landmarks: the ornate, Moorish-style railway station. The main façade was distinguished by tall, white, classically proportioned Roman columns and intricately detailed cornices, whilst a gracefully curved driveway and a covered Porte Cochere set the stage for an arrival of considerable grandeur.

    The Glittering Soul of an Era

    In its golden era, this iconic establishment was the glittering soul of pre-war Malaya. It was the premier venue where high society gathered for glamorous soirees, where colonial and local governments held their most prestigious receptions, and where international luminaries—from stars of stage and screen to influential politicians—chose to take up residence. It was, more than a hotel, a symbol of the nation's burgeoning success.

    The Majestic set a new standard for luxury, pioneering modern sanitation throughout. It introduced hot and cold running water, showers, and the rare indulgence of long baths in eighteen of its rooms—an almost unheard-of luxury at the time.

    A Legacy of Grandeur and Glamour

    The sumptuous surroundings were further enhanced by custom-designed furniture, fine silverware, and elegant furnishings, all specially imported from England. A particularly celebrated feature was the expansive roof garden, complete with a sprung dance floor and seating for 350 guests. This open-air oasis played host to a revolving programme of world-class entertainment, with artistes from across the globe, including popular acts straight from Hollywood and London's West End, ensuring the hotel was always at the very heart of cultural life.

    A National Treasure Reborn

    In its heyday, The Hotel Majestic was the largest and grandest hotel in Kuala Lumpur, unrivalled for its prestige and luxury. Favoured by the elite, she was the venue for extravagant parties, Sunday curry tiffin lunches and that most European of traditions, the tea dance.

    By the 1970s, the hotel had lost its lustre to newer and more luxurious competitors. Saved from demolition by the government, it was gazetted as a heritage building. The last guests checked out in 1983, after which the premises housed the National Art Gallery from 1984 until 1998.

    YTL Hotels was then entrusted with the restoration of this national treasure, a project the Company undertook with much pride.
