Learn MoreThe extraordinary stretch of northeastern Sardinian coastline known as the Costa Smeralda — or “the Emerald Coast” — remained largely undiscovered until the early 1960s, when a group of investors purchased 5,000 acres of this prized shoreline, home to fine white-sand beaches and coves lapped by the most transparent Mediterranean waters.
In 1964, construction of the village’s original core began under the creative direction of architect Luigi Vietti. The iconic Piazzetta—destined to become the heart of life in the Costa Smeralda—had already been paved, while Cervo Hotel, along with the first houses and the Marina of Porto Cervo, was taking shape as a defining element of the village.
The architecture unfolds in a palette of soft reds, pinks, yellows, and oranges. Vietti himself explained that, when designing Cervo Hotel, he sought to convey a subtle presence—one that blends seamlessly into the landscape and welcomes travelers arriving by sea. In the early years of the Costa Smeralda, the most common way to reach the destination was by sea in private boats. He chose to design sinuous forms and adorn them with warm colors that stand out against the blue of the sea and sky.
