The extraordinary piece of northeastern Sardinian coastline known as the Costa Smeralda — or “The Emerald Coast” — was largely undiscovered until the early 1960s when a committee of investors bought 5,000 acres of this prized stretch of fine white sand beaches and coves of the clearest Mediterranean water.
Life Centre
In 1964, constructions of the original core of the village started under Luigi Vietti's creative lead: the iconic Piazzetta, destined to become the life-centre of Costa Smeralda, has already been paved and the Cervo Hotel, together with the first houses and Marina of Porto Cervo, were rising as integral part of the village.
Subtle Presence
The architecture takes several shades of red, pink, yellow and orange. Vietti himself says that when he designed the Cervo Hotel, wanted to communicate a subtle presence nestled in the landscape to all travelers coming by the sea. In the early years of Costa Smeralda the most common way to reach the destination was by sea with private boats. He chose to create sinuous shapes and decorate with warm colors, that stand out among the blue of the sea and sky.
