About Our Hotel
A Historic Tribute
Did you know Marriott Bayfront is built on the historic Lane Field? Home to the Pacific Coast League Padres from 1936 to 1957, Lane Field is named after Bill Lane, the Padres' owner in the 1930’s. On May 2, 1948, Lane Field’s attendance hit a new record with 13,466 fans, forcing them to find a seat in the outfield. 65 years later, this is exactly where our hotel sits today.
Today's Lane Field is a part of “BRIC,” which plays off the names of our intersecting streets at Broadway and Pacific Highway. “BRIC” features Lane Field Park, which incorporates elements of the area's baseball heritage complete with a home plate, pitcher's mound, special lighting designating the three bases, and a special tribute to Padres legend Ted Williams. You can also find the original foul ball line running up the side of our hotel.
Not only was our hotel the original home of the San Diego Padres, we are also in close proximity to San Diego’s premier military attractions and installations. Due to this, it was important that the hotel displayed San Diego's rich history. The core of our architecture and design was inspired by a flag on the Midway. The flag means that a ship is clear for port and is our way of subtly dedicating this hotel to the essence of our military town.
