Joshua Tree National Park is immense, spanning nearly 800,000 acres, and infinitely variable. It can seem unwelcoming, even brutal, during the heat of summer when, in fact, it is delicate and extremely fragile.  This is a land shaped by strong winds, sudden torrents of rain, and climatic extremes. Rainfall is sparse and unpredictable, stream beds are usually dry and waterholes are few. Viewed in summer, this land may appear defeated and dead, but within this parched environment are intricate living systems waiting for the opportune moment to reproduce. The individuals, both plant and animal, that inhabit the park are not individualists. They depend on their entire ecosystem for survival.

Sunnylands the former Annenberg Estate, located in Rancho Mirage, California, is a 200-acre estate currently run by The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, a not-for-profit organization, and Annenberg family trust. The property was owned by Walter and Leonore Annenberg until 2009 and had been used as a winter retreat by the couple from 1966 when the house was completed. If you can plan ahead, you may purchase a ticket to tour the historic house and grounds or schedule a group tour for your organization, friends, or family. Visit Sunnylands Center & Gardens with no reservation or fee on Thursdays through Sundays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunnylands is closed July & August.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the world's largest rotating tramcar, allows you to experience a 10-minute breathtaking journey up the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon, from Valley Station's elevation of 2,643 feet to Mountain Station's elevation of 8,516 feet.
