Citadel

The imposing “Hisar” – Fortress – is the most interesting part of Ankara. This well-preserved quarter of thick walls and intriguing winding streets took its present shape in the 9th century AD, when the Byzantine emperor Michael II constructed the outer ramparts. The inner walls date from the 7th century. Inside the citadel local people still live as they would in a traditional Turkish village.

Weavers' Road

The shops on Çıkrıkçılar Yokuşu, also called Weavers' Road, are particularly reflective of the city’s past, offering a range of native fabrics, hand-woven carpets, and leather products. The Bakırcılar Çarşısı, or Bazaar of Coppersmiths, goes beyond copper, selling customary jewelry, carpets, costumes, antiques, and embroidery.

Anatolian Civilizations Museum

The superb Museum of Anatolian Civilizations is the perfect introduction to Turkey’s ancient past, housing artifacts carefully picked from just about every significant archaeological site in Anatolia. In the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Anatolian Archaeology, starting from the Paleolithic Age to the present day, is displayed in a chronological order.

Anitkabir

The monumental mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), the founder of modern Turkey, is perched high above the city with its abundance of marble and air of veneration. The inspiration for the artwork and statues at Anıtkabir are chosen from the War of Independence and the foundation of the Republic and Atatürk’s life.
