Sustainability at the Royal Hawaiian means taking advantage of one of our greatest assets, the sun that gives life to our islands. The solar thermal systems positioned on the roof of our Mailani Tower reduce our fuel consumption, lowering our carbon footprint significantly.
Sustainability at The Royal Hawaiian
Sustainability has been critically important to the Royal Hawaiian since its opening in 1927. The resort's iconic gardens and beautiful Coconut Grove were created with 40 varieties of plants, many of them native to Hawaii, and have only expanded since then. The hotel sits on grounds previously owned by Hawaiian royalty, and we are honored to share the rich history of this place with our guests and the rest of the world. To the Royal Hawaiian, preservation of both the natural and cultural elements of this land is our responsibility and our privilege.
Take a Trip That Gives Back
4 Easy Ways To Plan a Sustainable Hawaii Trip
Reusable Royal Hawaiian Water Bottles
Two stainless steel water bottles are included in your stay. By taking advantage of the water filling station adjacent to the Royal Hawaiian Bakery, as well as on each floor of the Mailani Tower, you can avoid single-use plastics which have a harmful effect on the environment.
Preserve the Environment by Reusing Linens
Guests have the option to forego daily linen changes, and help conserve natural resources.
Volunteer To Make a Difference
Choose to make your visitor experience more meaningful through Malama (giving back).
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen To Help Protect Our Oceans
Hawaii was the first state to prevent bleaching of coral and other damage to the islands' ocean habitat by prohibiting sunscreen that contains harmful chemicals. Here at the Royal Hawaiian, we partner with Project Reef—a local mineral sun care brand—to provide reef-safe sunscreen options, available for purchase at the Waikiki Beach Services retail location in our lobby.
