Design Philosophy
Inspired by the healing and restorative properties of Hamohamo and specifically Ulukou, the historic area of Waikiki where the Moana stands, design elements fascilitate rejuvenating guest experience that specifically tie back to the natural elements that have made this area so desirable over the years. Patterns weaving in motifs highlighting kou lei, the movement of the ocean, and the Banyan Tree’s majestic aerial roots create new visuals, unifying the distinct wings together into the singular Moana Surfrider experience.

Historic Lobby Refresh
The Moana Surfrider’s historic lobby has debuted with a refreshed sophisticated, tranquil aesthetic while staying true to the space’s colonial-style Victorian architecture. Graceful, curved seating vignettes welcome guests to the light-filled space, and accent tables play off the soaring ceiling's curved chandelier fixtures. Notable upgrades include newly refinished original wood flooring, custom-designed transitional furnishings, and bespoke art pieces by Kristen Reyno (Lola Pilar Hawaii), incorporating botanical elements of the hotel's Banyan tree. The front desk now features elegant check-in pods and a striking sculptural lighting fixture inspired by the courtyard's tree, which is on the National Register of Historic Trees. Adjacent to the lobby, the refreshed Vintage 1901 space features new furnishings that transition seamlessly from morning functionality to evening socializing.
