Rehabilitate the Blue Swimming Crab: Why it Matters
Replenishing the Depleted Numbers of Blue Swimmer Crab in Koh Samui
The blue swimmer crab is one of the most important animals to Koh Samui and other Thai fishing settlements. Due to overfishing, the population of this species is falling.
Crab is the predominant source of protein in local diets and the most prevalent source of income for local fishermen, hence a sustainable approach to maintaining its population is vital to ensure food and financial security for the community.

Rehabilitate the Blue Swimming Crab: The Impact
Supporting the Local Ecosystem and Community
Despite their ability to reproduce multiple times in a year, the local blue crab population continues to fall. In partnership with the Koh Samui Crab Bank, the program aims to help restore resources for the fisheries of Koh Samui. Guests can help restore population balance and understand how managing fishery resources, specifically caring for and increasing crab population numbers, supports the local community.
The activity enables the local population to continue crab fishing, an integral part of the Samui community, which helps them provide for their families and grow the local economy.
Since the Koh Samui Crab Bank’s inception, populations have steadily grown, increasing local food resources, as well as incomes. The initiative has also helped educate the local community about the impact of crab conservation in their day-to-day life.

Crab Bank help the restoration of fishery resources which many studies have shown that the number of Crab reduced drastically due to high fishing pressure is inevitably an effect to the fisherman and all the supply-chain sectors.
Since Crab is one of the main source of protein and income of the local fisherman therefore it is important to ensure sustainable approach in order to increase number of crab in the nature to help local community for food security and better living.
