Keeping cuisine simple yet elegant drives the philosophy of Executive Chef Mark Kropczynski and his culinary programming. With a prestigious culinary education and time spent learning from some of the best chefs throughout the United States, United Kingdom and Europe, Kropczynski brings a global approach to the culinary scene in San Diego while taking full advantage of the local ingredients. His culinary passions extend beyond the kitchen acquiring ingredients direct from the source, be it on land or at sea. An avid fisherman and lobster diver, he takes full advantage of the seafood found off the California coast; and can then be found inland foraging for mushrooms when in season. For events, Kropczynski creates diverse menus with a “never say no” attitude, customizing them to meet clients’ tastes. In Grant Grill, he defines California cuisine by highlighting seasonal and locally sourced ingredients while maintaining a balance of traditional preparations and modern innovation.

The Grant Grill Invasion

Since 1951, Grant Grill has been at the forefront of San Diego’s culinary scene. In the 1950s and ’60s, it was well regarded as the place to power lunch. Lawyers, bankers and newspaper editors frequented the sanctified room, which was guaranteed to be “men only” until 3:00 p.m. In 1969, this strict policy finally changed when a group of local female attorneys notoriously (and successfully) staged a “sit-in.” Waving a New York gender discrimination case in hand, the women were seated at a table and proceeded to return several times over the span of a year until the policy was finally removed. Today, the “Grant Grill Invasion” as it has been called, is still applauded as a turning point in San Diego’s history, and a brass plaque commemorating their feat is on display outside Grant Grill’s entry.
