Bamboo sharks are one of the native shark species from the Andaman Sea but their dwindling numbers have put them under the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s “Near Threatened” list.  

As a predatory fish for the shallow reefs in Phuket and Khao Lak, bamboo sharks help maintain the balance of the food chain and serve as an indicator for the reef’s health. Due to their popularity among collectors and exotic diners, as well as overfishing and the destruction of their natural habitat, they are now classified as potentially endangered.

The experience offers guests a hands-on and educational experience to help promote the Andaman Sea’s bamboo shark population while learning about how a balanced ecosystem keeps our oceans healthy.

As sharks are a key predator in the ocean, the drastic decline of their population affects the entire marine ecosystem, which includes endangering coral reefs and other marine species. Breeding and hatching bamboo shark eggs in aquariums and nurseries rather than in the open sea help protect baby bamboo sharks from other predators during their vulnerable age. Once they reach a certain size, the release of juvenile sharks into the wild will have a high chance of survival in order to help balance the food chain again.  With the help of our guests, the Bamboo Shark Nursery & Conservation Center aims to help restore the Bamboo Shark population in the wild and population balance in the Andaman Sea’s marine ecosystem.
