With a wide swath of soft white sand, iconic blue beach umbrellas, and an intimate pool under the historic Banyan tree, the Moana Surfrider’s pool and beach experiences are extraordinary. The resort has a beachfront stretch of over 600 feet, making it one of the longest stretches of sand in Waikiki. You can relax to the sound of the waves or jump in for surf and outrigger canoeing lessons. Pool: Open 7am-6pm. Paid cabanas and umbrellas can be booked 24 hours in advance

    Moana Surfrider History

    In 1901, English businessman Walter C. Peacock and his Moana Hotel Company, Ltd. Developed the Moana Hotel at a cost of $150,000. An ode to Victorian elegance, luxuries included the Territory of Hawaii’s first electric-powered elevator and guestrooms with their own telephones and private baths. Two wings were added in 1918 to create the famous “H” shape recognized today. The Surfrider Hotel was built in 1952 and the Surfrider Tower in 1969.​

    Historic Tour

    The Moana Hotel officially opened on March 11, 1901, ushering in the birth of tourism for the islands. Designed in the old colonial style architecture of the period, it boasted 75 rooms and was the costliest, most elaborate and modern hotel building in the Hawaiian Islands at the time. Stroll through the “First Lady of Waikiki’s” history from then until now on this guided tour.

    The famous Moana Surfrider Banyan Tree, under whose branches romance blooms, relationships renew, and secrets are shared, was planted at the resort over a century ago. The tree named Deva is a 75-foot-high natural wonder that stretches 150-feet across. She’s a millennium landmark tree, the designation reserved for the one tree in each state that holds important national and local historic value.

    Holiday Traditions at the Moana Surfrider

    Creating holiday traditions since 1901, the resort has created incredible memories for families since the turn of the century. The soaring Christmas tree is placed in the middle of the Historic Lobby, accompanied by the annual gingerbread display, which changes every year. The high tea tradition at The Veranda takes on special meaning during the festive season, with unique holiday flavors and a beloved Keiki Holiday Tea that can be enjoyed through season. Don’t miss the resort’s classic Christmas stollen, which is only baked in December.
