Sustainability & Community Engagement at Sheraton Kagoshima
Sustainability & Community Engagement
At Sheraton Kagoshima, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and supporting the community in which we are located. At our hotel, we strive to reduce environmental impact in our daily operations based on these international standards, while also maintaining and enhancing service quality. Enjoy Kagoshima’s unique food culture, natural surroundings, and local experiences, while knowing your stay is responsibly managed.
We monitor our monthly energy consumption and actively work to reduce energy usage throughout the hotel. In addition, our air conditioning systems are operated efficiently according to occupancy levels and time of day, helping to minimize waste while maintaining stable and effective energy management.
Throughout the hotel, we have introduced water-saving showers to help use water resources more efficiently while maintaining guest comfort.
Sheraton Kagoshima has earned Green Key Certification, an internationally recognized environmental certification for the hospitality industry. Green Key is an environmental certification program developed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). We are committed to reducing our environmental impact while maintaining a high-quality guest experience and supporting sustainable tourism.
We collaborate with producers across Kagoshima Prefecture and actively incorporate locally sourced ingredients into our offerings. Our restaurants and bars feature seasonal menus highlighting these ingredients, providing guests with opportunities to experience local flavors and regional food culture.
We are promoting a “Food Recycling Loop” initiative that transforms food waste generated within the hotel into new resources. Food waste is recycled into compost, which is then used to grow locally produced takana greens that are incorporated back into our cuisine, supporting a more circular approach to resource use.
We are committed to reducing plastic use by introducing more sustainable amenities in all guest rooms. We strive to balance guest comfort with environmental responsibility.
Through initiatives such as collecting unwanted clothing and plastic bottle caps, we support recycling activities and community-focused programs. By promoting initiatives that are easy to participate in as part of everyday operations, we aim to encourage broader community involvement and positive social impact.
We support environmentally responsible travel by providing guests with information about the local area’s natural attractions and cultural experiences. We also encourage low-impact ways of exploring the destination, such as walking, cycling, and using public transportation, helping to promote more sustainable tourism practices.
We participates in “World Cleanup Day,” a United Nations International Day initiative, through local clean-up activities. Participants collect and sort waste such as trash, bottles, cans, plastic bottles, and metal items, helping promote environmental awareness and cleaner public spaces. Through these efforts, we continue supporting sustainable initiatives for the local community and environment.
Earth Hour
We participated in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 28. From 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, lights were dimmed throughout the hotel, creating a special atmosphere illuminated by candlelight. Guests enjoyed candle art featuring the “+60” message and a mini concert in the first-floor lobby inspired by “a place where the world comes together.” Through music and conversation, we shared an hour reflecting on our planet together.
