Sustainability & Community Engagement at W Melbourne
Sustainability & Community Engagement
At W Melbourne, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and supporting the community in which we are located. Located in the heart of Melbourne, we take a considered approach to managing our footprint and minimising our impact on the surrounding urban environment. Enjoy bold design, vibrant dining and immersive experiences inspired by Melbourne’s culture while knowing your stay is responsibly managed.
We've introduced filtered drinking water taps in every guest room, removing the need to single-use plastic bottles and providing unlimited access to drinking water throughout every stay. This has prevented almost 215,000 of plastic bottles from ending up in landfill each year, providing a convinient solution while also reducing our impact on the planet.
We parther with the Nature Conservancy, supporting the Shuck Don’t Chuck initiative to help restore reefs, improve marine habitats, and reduce landfill waste. Seafood shells are collected across our dining venues which are then cured before being returned to sea to help create living reefs. As of 2025, over 825 tonnes of shells have helped restore nearly 12 hectares of reef across four sites in Victoria.
We partner with Davines Group, a certified B Corporation and CO2-neutral luxury amenities brand, to provide an exclusive range of shower and bath products. These are available in large formats in each guest room, made from recycable materials and helping reduce single-use plastic.
We work with a large number of local producers and suppliers to ethically source ingredients used across the hotel and restaurants. This includes local poultry suppliers and butchers, sustainable seafood, ethically sourced tea and coffee, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables. We aim to showcase the best of what Victorian produce has to offer, opting for local growers and makers whenever possible.
Behind the scenes, W Melbourne is designed to operate smarter, using energy only where and when it’s needed. Our lighting, climate control and hot water systems adjust automatically based on hotel occupancy, helping reduce unnecessary energy use. Guest rooms are also supported by a smart management system that controls lighting and air-conditioning based on occupancy.
In partnership with the Department of Workplace Relations, W Melbourne has delivered a tailored program focusing on pre-employment training, mentorship and job security pathways for job seekers facing barriers to employment. This ongoing initiative helps create meaningful employment opportunities while building a workforce that is deeply connected to our local community.
W Melbourne is proud to have helped author the ANZP DEIB+ Policy, supporting positive workplace practices for Marriott International associates across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Our partnerships and employment initiatives further this commitment by creating meaningful pathways for individuals facing barriers to employment.
Great talent comes from every community. Through partnerships with All Things Equal and Meals with Impact, W Melbourne creates employment pathways into hospitality for people with disability and refugee and migrant women. As the first hotel to employ an associate through the Australian Government’s Employing 100 Initiative, we’re helping create meaningful opportunities for people facing barriers to employment.
W Melbourne proudly supports the LGBTQIA+ community through participation in community events, including the annual Pride March in St Kilda and Pride fundraising initiatives. These moments bring our associates together while supporting important community causes and strengthening our connection with the communities around us.
W Melbourne is launching a Social Impact Kiosk in partnership with Meals with Impact, providing complimentary, nutritious meals for associates while on shift in sustainable packaging. The initiative supports associate wellbeing while strengthening our partnership with a social enterprise that creates meaningful employment and training opportunities within the community.
At W Melbourne, culture is a commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for our talent, supporting our community and driving positive impact. As part of Marriott International, we support our associates in building rewarding careers while creating opportunities to make a meaningful difference within our hotel and the wider community.
Refresh, Not Replace gives guests the option to take a lighter-touch approach to daily servicing during their stay. It’s one of the ways we encourage more considered choices while continuing to deliver the signature W Melbourne experience.
