It was inaugurated by the National Parks Administration on March 17, 1940. The building occupies the east wing of the Civic Center of San Carlos de Bariloche, a building complex declared a National Historic Monument.

This museum was created by the Bariloche Paleontological Association, which aims to detect and preserve the fossil record of the region, particularly the northwestern area of Patagonia Argentina.

It permanently exhibits replicas of the three most important works by Michelangelo Buonarroti: the David, the Pietà and the Moses, in original size and traced directly from the originals from Italy.
