At the turn of the 19th and 20th century Warsaw was at its rise with stunning new architecture, changing the face of the city, as well as the new inventions entering the common people’s lives. The growing metropolis was full of tenement houses, enchanting palatial residences and the only thing Warsaw lacked was the truly luxurious hotel, appropriate for the upcoming new century. Meanwhile Ignacy Jan Paderewski, a virtuoso pianist and composer, continued to gain impressive international popularity. After major successes of his appearances in Paris and London, he was ready for the enormous triumph in the United States. As for today’s standards, Paderewski was a real superstar. In 1895 he bought the palace jointly with Stanisław Roszkowski, his plenipotentiary and financial advisor and Mr. Edmund Zaremba. Soon they have decided that the changing face of Warsaw needs new facilities. The way to the Bristol’s future was wide open.
In 1899 the construction works began and two years later Hotel Bristol was pleased to welcome guests for the first time. They were truly enchanted by the exceptional and fashionable Art Nouveau architectural project of Władysław Marconi and a very special attention paid to detail.
They arrived to Bristol in 1901 were surprised by both the outstanding interiors and the palatial façade, as well as the state-of-the-art technical facilities used for their convenience, such as the exquisite guest lift allowing to access Hotel’s eight floors with an ease, eighteen square meters sized Hotel’s front windows, the electric clock on the façade or the six telephone lines (of the total eight hundred available in Warsaw at the time). Guests, press and common Warsaw citizens were stunned and the stories about the central heating, the marvelous rooms with hot and cold water available in the bathrooms or the outstanding shops next to the reception, spread fast across the city, Poland and the whole Europe. The Warsaw’s gem was born.
Over 120 year later, Hotel Bristol still serves as the city landmark, remaining a synonym of luxury, culture and unequalled national treasure.
