Home to Hawaiian Artifacts, Décor, and Portraits

Our Big Island hotel showcases many exquisite and historical artifacts depicting traditional life in Hawaii through various ages, immersing our guests in authentic Hawaiian culture.

Among these many treasures are fascinating portraits of Hawaiian royalty, displays of domestic and agricultural artifacts, and much more. A gorgeous Hawaiian mural greets you the minute you step into our lobby area. The large and compelling piece was painted by late renowned artist Herb Kane and depicts Kamehameha the Great in conversation with his son, Prince Liholiho, overlooking Kamakahonu Bay and Ahu‘ena Heiau. To the left, sits Queen Ka'ahumanu, a favorite wife of Kamehameha and champion of the missionaries. A formidable person, she became the most prominent woman in politics and was named Kuhinanui, or Esteemed Regent, to Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III.

In addition to portraits of King Kamehameha the Great and Queen Ka‘ahumanu, our Big Island hotel boasts 20 beautiful paintings of other Hawaiian royalty. Discover the great history and stories at our historic hotel in Kona, Hawaii.

Ahu'ena Heiau

Reconstructed between 1812 and 1813 by King Kamehameha the Great, the Ahu'ena Heiau is a National Historic Landmark and one of Hawaii's most important cultural sites. This site serves many purposes, including a structure dedicated to Lono, the Hawaiian god of peace, agriculture, and prosperity. Images in the Heiau were of ancestral gods with whom Kamehameha maintained close rapport for the benefit of his kingdom. Members of Kamehameha's council frequently met with him here to conduct matters of state for the kingdom. After his death, the council met here to instruct Kamehameha's young heir in the ways of wise government. Located next to our Luau Grounds, this landmark is still used for traditional purposes so it can be viewed but not entered.

Ahu'ena Heiau Hotel

The History of Kamakahonu Bay

Often referred to as the Eye of the Turtle, Kamakahonu Bay is one of the most historical places in all of Hawaii. Situated on the same location as our Kona beach hotel, it was here that Kamehameha the Great spent his last years. Founder and first ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom, he united and ruled the islands during a time of great cultural change and took great steps to ensure that the Hawaiian Islands remained united even after his death.
