Our Story
About The Burgess Hotel
As world travelers, it has been the dream of the Jokhis to share the story of their travels through hospitality. Thus was The Burgess Hotel born, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel and Buckhead’s first boutique hotel. Inspired by a desire to live fully “in the moment,” this full-service lifestyle property veers away from the status quo and toward a more personal experience. It’s equal parts charismatic and playful, adorned with eye-catching colors and original artifacts from Asia and beyond. The design scheme is bespoke and eclectic. Lavish and inviting. Graced with original paintings and digital collages by the owner’s artist-daughter, Jessica. It all converges into a cosmopolitan elegance you’ve never seen, an aesthetic that embraces art and leisure – without feeling extravagant. The Jokhis consider The Burgess Hotel an extension of their home, and they welcome you into its thoughtfully designed rooms with open arms.
Spotlight on the Owners
Pioneers in the High-End Buckhead Hotel Scene
The perfect marriage of timeless cultural treasures and contemporary style, The Burgess Hotel reflects the eclecticism and personal styles of the hotel owners. Burges helms the kitchen as Executive Chef at Fia Restaurant, bringing to every plate his culinary expertise from Johnson & Wales and the skills he refined as a caterer to the United Nations and exclusive New York social circles. Freny’s, a Rhode Island School of Design graduate, with an eye for fashionable interiors, sourced some of the hotel's furnishings from their favorite travels. This boutique experience is complemented by the remarkable artwork from Jessica Jokhi, creating an atmosphere unlike any other in the affluent neighborhood of Buckhead.
Our Home Is Yours, Too
We Invite You to Be Part of Our Story
The Burgess Hotel is every bit as unique as you are. Just browse the international artwork that we’ve collected from our travels. You’ll see that our unique keepsakes, beautiful furnishings, and stunning artwork – including colorful and thought-provoking paintings and digital collages by the owners’ daughter – tell our personal family stories. As our guest, you become part of them, because we view our boutique hotel as an extension of our family’s living room. We invite you to settle in. Linger in the library. Have a drink at Mr. B. Bar while admiring the stunning photos of Everest and the Himalayas taken by the owners' father on his many expeditions. Then, allow the owner and Executive Chef Burges to prepare you a Mediterranean-inspired dish or family recipe that you can savor indoors or en plein air at Fia restaurant. Please make yourself at home.
Balinese Tribal Lion Bench
Handcrafted by village artisans in Indonesia, this Tribal Lion Bench is a proud find from Bali. It was carved from a single length of hardwood, with four solid wooden legs completing the piece. Animals are part of daily life in these remote regions, so they often appear in wood carving, textiles, and other art. The spiral and circular details were etched to reflect traditional designs typical of West Timor.
Front Desk Mother of Pearl Inlay
This custom piece came to us from India. The mother of pearl was harvested from the sea, carefully cut from the inner shell layer of a mollusk. Its iridescence is its most stunning quality, though it is also quite strong and resilient. You can find this type of decorative furniture in many East Asian and Middle Eastern homes. Our grandparents’ homes had pieces much like this.
Traditional Chinese Brush Paintings
Chinese brush painting is one of the oldest forms of artistic expression in China. The pair on either side of the front entrance have been in our family for many years. Kuku Bunshah, mother of The Burgess Hotel owner, Freny Jokhi, painted these cherished pieces of art when she lived in Hong Kong. Though Kuku was a commercial artist, she worked with many different mediums.
Chinese Tessellated Bone Dragon Sculpture
In Chinese culture, the dragon is associated with benevolence and fertility. This sculpture is special because it is a five-clawed serpent dragon. These were once reserved for display in the emperor’s palace. It was believed that all dragons brought benevolence and fertility as well as symbolizing strength and protection. Our serpentine dragon welcomes our guests with the same.
Palm Tree Vase
Palm trees are ubiquitous in Bali, swaying on a sea breeze and providing shade from the sun. They are the ultimate symbol of relaxation and bliss and are depicted in all styles of art, from painting and silk screen to sculpture. Our colorful vase has been carved from the trunk of a palm tree – hollowed out, polished, and painted with an intricate hand by a Balinese artist.
Sengoku Samurai Armor, Kagoshima, Japan
Today, we consider this life-size Samurai armor, or yoroi, from the Sengoku Period a wearable work of art. But in its time, it was battle armor. Its craftsmanship is remarkable. The iron body was hand-finished with rivets. Chainmail sleeves and thigh guards were crafted from small pieces of lacquered metal linked by silk laces and cords. The helmet, or kabuto, was fashioned from eight iron plates.
Step Into Another World
Suites That Transport You to Faraway Lands
The seven luxurious suites and the penthouse offer an exciting and dynamic window into the travels of Burgess Hotel owners Burges and Freny Jokhi. Each suite has its own international personality, inspired by the cultures and traditions of a destination that the couple has explored. Amid spaces inspired by China, Morocco, India, Bali, Fiji, Arabia, London, and an African Safari, you’ll be embraced by the unique colors, textures, fabrics, and objets d’art that embody your suite’s theme. Fall asleep at the headboard carved from a temple door. Stretch out on an exquisitely carved daybed from the Arabian Peninsula. Lounge among the soothing sand and sea hues of a Fijian beach. Or follow your inner explorer to the African Safari Penthouse, adorned in furnishings and tribal carvings from the finest lodges in the bush. At The Burgess Hotel, every suite is a boutique-style adventure!
Learn MoreThe Library
Make Yourself at Home in This Cozy Corner
Our library is a bibliophile’s and adventurer’s dream. Its titles, blue monochrome bookshelves, and explorer’s atmosphere were curated for the curious reader in all of us. There’s no resisting the pull of this tranquil, book-lined retreat of comfortable furnishings faced by a custom-made marble fireplace flanked by sculpted goddesses. This reading sanctuary was inspired by the exciting life of Keki Bunshah – father of Burgess owner Freny Jokhi, an avid reader, and an adventurer who organized the first Indian expedition to Mt. Everest. We invite you to browse our titles and Keki’s beautiful photos of the Himalayas before or after dinner or over morning coffee or tea.
